WHAT IS COACHING?

Executive coaching is a professional relationship between a certified coach and a client, typically an executive or high-potential leader within an organization, aimed at enhancing the client’s leadership skills, self-awareness, and performance.

Coaching involves a structured process where the coach uses a combination of observation, questioning, listening, and feedback to create a conversation rich in insight and learning. Gaining up to date evidence will greatly support the coaching engagment.

The coach’s role is to facilitate the client’s growth by sharing observations and asking questions that prompt the client to consider new perspectives and take responsibility for their actions. Coaching isn’t about telling you what you should or shouldn’t do.

The goal of executive coaching is to help the client achieve their personal and professional goals while improving their impact within the organization. This can include developing executive presence, improving decision-making skills, increasing emotional intelligence, and addressing specific leadership challenges. Coaching engagements are typically structured and goal-oriented, with clear objectives set at the outset.

Engagments for leadership coaching are 12, 9 or 6 months.

As an executive coach, I focus on helping and enabling leaders to understand their current competencies, see how they’re perceived by others, and work on what they can ‘control’ to strengthen their leadership capabilities. It’s about unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance and, by extension, the performance of their organization.

WHY IS COACHING IMPORTANT?

Coaching is important for several reasons. I believe that the indidual must want to get coaching rather that being told to get a coach.

First, it helps individuals get better. Through coaching, people can improve their performance, enhance their skills, and become more effective in their roles. This is not just about correcting weaknesses, but also about building on strengths and unlocking potential.

Second, coaching greatly accelerates the process of improvement. With a coach, individuals can achieve their goals faster than they would on their own. A coach provides guidance, support, and holds the individual to account.

Third, coaching can lead to self-sufficiency. Over time, individuals who are coached learn to develop the skills and habits necessary to coach themselves, which means they continue to grow and develop long after the formal coaching relationship has ended.

In my work, I’ve seen firsthand how coaching can transform leaders and organizations. It’s not just about the bottom line; it’s about helping people become better versions of themselves, which in turn creates a positive ripple effect throughout their teams, organizations, and the communities they serve.

Remeber you have to want to improve for coaching to work.
